Real Sports on HBO this month is featuring a fellow named Lewis Gordon Pugh, who has done long distance swims in a variety of water temps. If you get a chance this story will leave you shaking your head, and possibly shivering as well.

A couple of years ago I read Lynne Cox's book, Swimming to Antarctica . The last swim in the book was 1.2 mile in sub-freezing water (below 0/32) in Antarctica. But the really scary swim in that book was the one in the Nile where she had to dodge some floating animal carcasses.
