When I swim freestyle I usually breath once every four stroke. If I breath every other stroke I feel lots of pressure on my left side( I breath to my right). Is this because of my poor breath technique?

Alternate breathing (every 3) takes a bit to get used to. You've probably developed more flexibilty and strength by breathing to your right for so long. Stick with the alternate breathing in workout on occasion. It may be difficult at first but it will help balance out your strength over time on that side.
