I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds.
I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.
stud,
you have marks to beat
to start with 25's
build some basic speed
when you get under 20 for a 25 kick
start doing 50's
when you get under 40 for a 50 kick start doing 100's

I was happy that I got 24 on the SDK, which is as fast as kicking on the surface with the board which adds buoancy. I'll need to get a coach or guard to help but the pool was bit busy.
Tee numbers seem to add up though, and go in the order I think they should at least. SDK is fastest.; next is flutter with boad and last is flutter no board. Although the 26 might be a little slower than I should be...
I had to contend with a fellow swimmer.
3 times a week with the 75/25 set Ande? Is that enough?
Hi Ande,
I'm back for another season, the slogan is "The One where I build up" toward respectability.
I've restarted training a months ago, unfortunately for only 2 times 50min a week with a team, but with the new year I'll go back to training alone also for about 2 more sessions a week, so I dont' think to improve at lot until X'mas. We do fewer kicking sets that I used to do.
BTW I'm working on my core and my legs at home, I'm stretching my ankles with a homemade rack with good results, my core is more strong, my SDK is improved, my legs feel great, I've gained some degrees on the ankles flexibility.
Training my legs with ankles weight and exercise on the floor works better for me that working out them at gym with leg press, leg extension. I gain better endurance in water.
Soon I'll start to timing myself again. I feel that I'm still a little bit slower that last july.
I'll get back with more update soon.
(Push off the wall, kickboard, Timing Myself, SCM pool, 25m )
- Early October 07 45.0sec
- Early january 08 30.5s
- End July 08 23.7 secs
- restart training mid-Sept
- Goal July 09 Under 20s x 25m, Under 50s x 50m)
I kicked my fastest 25 yard flutter today with a board in 19.8 seconds. I was doing some pure speed work at the end of my swim and decided to make 2x25 sprint flutter kicks and I did them in 19.8s and 20.5s. Now I have a time to improve upon. Sub 19s is my short term goal right now with under 18s as my future goal.
My previous best was around a 21.5 or so. I'm swimming at the university pool right now and it's kept a little cooler and is a nicer pool so that might have contributed to the drop in time plus I've been working the squats quite a bit in the weightroom.
Previous best 25yd flutter w/board--21.5

Officially discouraged.
Hi Notsofast, you'd not be discouraged. Look like you've reached a wall, it's happens at everybody a day, into a range around 24s, maybe your body is now well used at your routines so it's the time to mix up the things a little bit to try somethings new, maybe the technique can be further improved, at the end don't give up, trust in yourself.
I expect that anybody in good health, focused, can go down at 20s at least, even more if we're talking about yards.
Ande, where are you ?
