Swimming Blog Rotation?

Perhaps there would be interest in a rotating blog--a different swimmer each week posting his or her workouts. This would provide some insight into what various individuals are doing across the country (or around the world for that matter).

  • The Tennesse Tumble Turn was invented by David Edgar, who was one of the greatest college swimmers of all time. He is the only man to win the 50 and the 100 Free, at the NCAA Championships three straight years (1970, 1971, 1972) and no one has done that double triple ever. He was inducted into the ISHOF in 1996, 24 years after he retired from swimming. I believe the Hall was a little late about this, but at least he got in. www.ishof.org/96dedgar.html
  • Here's a "how-to" I found: www.goswim.tv/drilloftheweek_comments.php Glenn Mills says it was Ray Bussard that invented the drill, not Edgar.

David Edgar swam for the University of Tennessee and Ray Bussard was his coach. I remember him doing a demonstration many years ago in either Swim Technique or Swimming World. He was the first swimmer to make it popular. Maybe inventing was the wrong word. He helped make it popular.

As I mentioned before, I swam for 30 min. on Friday and ended up in excruciating pain for the rest of the weekend. I begged and managed to get in to see a sports medicine dr. on Monday (one of the docs for the Sacramento Kings!) and after hearing my symptoms, be believes that I injured my C7 disk! Ugh. A back (or in this case, a neck) injury. I did it working on my starts and for the life of me I can't figure out how I hit the water wrong. I am so bummed because I was just getting over my "fear of the smack"...some of you may remember my rants about my big starting block phobia a few years ago, and I've incorporated so much of your good advice. Last night I took a spinning class, but as you all know, it's just not the same....(sniff, sniff!) Dr. says that I can do everything that doesn't hurt, and he even told me that I can swim if there's no pain, but after last Friday I am a bit hesitant to jump back in. I might go tonight and just kick - I seriously miss the water. He also told me that this injury is common with basketball players and that they heal (albiet slowly) 9 out of 10 times. Worst case: surgery. Best case: I heal slowly. No meets; no starting blocks. At this point I am looking towards Worlds in August.... So word of warning friends: be careful with your neck and back, even in the water! I'm getting an MRI on Monday and we'll just to go from there. All I can say is: thank goodness for Vicodin.

Patrick - what happened to your friend? How did the surgery go? Do they swim? if so, can they go off a starting block? What was their recovery time? Fee free to email me at: klwilkinson@ucdavis.edu

Kari: He returned to the pool in 2 months, he's mainly a cyclist, so that head position was pretty important. He laid low for about 4 weeks, and then slowly started walking, stretching, and getting some upright excercise. I'm sure I saw him dive from the side of the pool at least, I can't imagine you won't be back to full strength after a recovery.

I finally got past my starting block phobia and look at me now!!! Patrick - it's good to know that your friend is back to "normal"...I don't want to have surgery (had shoulder surgery last summer and missed competing!) but if that's what it takes... Was he able to get in the water and kick while he was recovering?
