I've read in a few web sites that you burn less calories swimming freestyle than using a breaststroke, is this true ? why ?
Can anyone expand on this concept ?

I don't know and I wonder if anyone really does.
You could have a new swimmer that can barely complete a 25
yard free burn more calories than an olympic swimmer sprinting a 50 yard ***.
It depends on technique and conditioning.
