I bet it all started with a "I'd rather be shot than train again." Something pretty much every swimmer has said ... a club team in my area got t-shirts if they made every double practice over winter break that said, "Welcome to hell you've sold your soul to Sam." Sam*, being the coach.
To me this is a extreme version of that ... I bet it all started as harmless fun and was a "wouldn't it be funny if we ... " and spiraled out of control ...
