Is it safe to assume that one's favorite stroke is also the one he/she is best at? Any exceptions?

Well, if this question had been asked of me just two weeks ago, I would have said free and fly were my favorites with *** coming in a close third. I totally revamped my free and ***, dropped time and was swimming them just great. Well, I lost 5 pounds and now can't swim a 50 free to save my life. I literally have lost the ability to swim freestyle. And don't even get me started on breaststroke. But, for someone that is only 4' 11" tall, I am quite good at backstroke. It is the most fun for me!!
  • Woohoo!!! I just brought butterfly to the lead in the polls!!!! All flyer's out there - let's keep it in the lead! :applaud: :bliss:  :groovy: :party2: :roids: :thhbbb: :weightlifter:

But, as much as I love watching fly- and it's my SECOND favorite stroke, I just voted for breaststroke; my best and favorite. :D Let's go, FROGS!!!:cheerleader:

Is it safe to assume that one's favorite stroke is also the one he/she is best at? It is rarely safe to assume anything. See The Four Agreements.

Interesting, I wonder where the flyers swim? Butterfly is the rarest style I see at any pool, and they usually had to "squeeze in" for a lap that they enjoy so much. It is rarely safe to assume anything. See The Four Agreements. OK, the other way to ask my question is, are you best at the stroke you like the most? Not speed-wise (since freestyle is usually the fastest), but closest to the "perfect stroke".

I am shocked to see that fly is on par with free, tells me that I'm weak and you guys kick a#@.

I voted Freestyle but butterfly is what brought me back to swimming after my problem in 1952. I could only swim sprints and I could beat everyone in Canada for a 50 and 100 Fly. It gave me 4 events I could enter and do well, 50 and 100 Free along with the Fly.

While I train predominantly on free, and hope to be competing mid-distance free, butterfly is my first love, it just hurts too much these days. As a kid I could beat all the boys at fly, I would swim my own age group and the next age up (eg when I was 12, I got to swim 12u and 14u events) to score team points. Now when I hit the rhythm right, it still feels a more natural stroke for me than free. Perhaps I'm just weird. One thing I know for sure though is that I should train more on fly!
  • OK after HS & College too much free, I started to do more fly.
