I read on swimming world that a group of 20 Finnish swimmers set a world record by going 184,994 meters in 24 hours.
I did the math and found their average speed was 46.7 seconds per 100 meters: world record pace for 24 hrs.! How'd they do that? All I can think is, 25 meter pool, with each relay participant going 25 at a time from a dive. Everyone would have to be an elite swimmer, because the average split would be 11.67, done once every 3:54, 370 times. Or am I misunderstanding what they did?
Does anyone out there know about this? What are the rules?
Doesn't it sound like a made-for-masters kind of event? It could be attached to a national meet. Whole age groups could do it together and raise a bundle of money for some important cause (currently disaster relief).

I agree - if they did it one after another in relay form - they went 125 meters every minute.
If they did it as a group and added all the meters together- then that gives them 9200 meters each over a 24 hr period. Most good High school programs could best that - on about any day of the season- if that is what they are measuring.
Seems impossible if I did the math right.
