I won't go into any details because I don't know who might be reading this, but after my son's first day of USS he does not want to go back. He hadn't been in the water in 6 weeks (summer rec)and worked so hard (swam over 500 yards!) and did some of the best kicking (compared to the other kids with fins!).
I won't make him go back, but we now need to find a way to get him feeling good about what he HAS accomplished in swimming.
Anybody else, swimmers themselves for a long time, teach their own children to swim? We originally didn't want to, but we are now convinced that that is the best thing for our son. Help please :)
Thanks everyone for the great advice.
Patrick absolutely LOVES the water, in fact, today he wanted to go swimming, in Grandma's pool! He did do summer rec and had a ball. His first "meet" (25 free) was in mid-July and his last was the first week of August. He was very excited. He liked the idea of swimming again, but I think you're right, this USS team is not the placement for him now.
We are having a pool built this Fall (hopefully starting next week) because all three of our kids love the water. We will continue to play a lot, have friends over, and learn the strokes. My husband taught Patrick butterfly in about 20 minutes (and it's really good!).
Thanks for letting me vent. I wasn't so disappointed that Patrick didn't want to swim (that's OK, I don't want to push him), but I was really disappointed in this program, the lack of coaches with experience with young children, etc. I wish he could come to Ohio, that program sounds wonderful and what we would ideally like to have.
