Five year old quits swimming :(

I won't go into any details because I don't know who might be reading this, but after my son's first day of USS he does not want to go back. He hadn't been in the water in 6 weeks (summer rec)and worked so hard (swam over 500 yards!) and did some of the best kicking (compared to the other kids with fins!). I won't make him go back, but we now need to find a way to get him feeling good about what he HAS accomplished in swimming. Anybody else, swimmers themselves for a long time, teach their own children to swim? We originally didn't want to, but we are now convinced that that is the best thing for our son. Help please :)

when my DGD was 4 her big brother started soccer and she just seemed to be left out in general. So I offered to pay for private swim lesson from the coach of the local swim team. After lessons... he brought her from being a nonswimmer to being ready for the youngest groups on the team in about 3 months... she started swimming with the team. BUT, we have always been very sensitive to pushing her. Within reason, she is now 7, she determines if she wants to go to practice. And, her whole life doesn't revolve around swimming. If it means skipping a swim practice because the family is going out of town then she misses practice if she wants to. Her team is year round, but she was traveling here and there more this summer than she attended practice. When practice started back up this fall, she was more than excited and ready to get back to it. As she gets older I'm sure her parents will emphasize how important it is to commit to something, if you are serious about it. BUt right now the emphasis is on learning technique, beginning to develop endurance and having fun at practice and meets. BTW, she is doing great, placing and winning medals. Lainey
