Pugh Completes Long-Distance Swim in Arctic Ocean -- August 24, 2005
ARCTIC OCEAN, August 24. SWIMMING in water that measured three degrees Celsius, Lewis Pugh recently covered a distance of 1.07 kilometers in the Arctic Ocean. Pugh spent a little more than 20 minutes in the frigid water and became the first individual to complete a long-distance swim in the Arctic Ocean, just off the Spitsbergen Island in Norway.
Pugh conducted the swim under the rules of the English Channel Swimming Association, which prevents the use of a wetsuit or drysuit. Pugh prepared for his swim by training in an icy pool for several weeks before the Arctic Ocean outing. Pugh was aided in the water by a support ship, which kept watch for polar bears and walruses.
I read the above article inthe Newsletter sent by swiminfo. Can you imagine swimming in water that cold.

I wonder what the insurance rates are, for the risk of being eaten by a polar bear? :)

Probably seasonal - better rates in the summer.

So what about Lynn Cox????????
"Lynn Cox took the record for the longest swim recorded in the coldest water conditions. In l987 at the age of 30 years she was able to tolerate, unharmed and under close medical supervision a 2.5 mile swim that separates the Diomede Islands in the Arctic Ocean."

Moreso than I can imagine trying to convince my wife that spending that kind of money to swim 1+ km would be a good use of our financial resources. The swim MIGHT kill me, but Deb WOULD kill me.
