a challenge from New masters swimmer aka jim B.

I received a challenge from New masters swimmer aka jim B he wrote "Overall I'm not quite ready to vanquish Ande yet .... but I am formally challenging Ande on the 500 free...... At the end of the short course season, the man with the slower 500 free time has to buy the other swimmer one beer for every second he is behind the faster swimmers time .... (kinda like the John Smith vs Bobby Patten bet at Nationals last year) ..... Hopefully Ande will go to Nationals in Coral Gables this year so we might get to face off head to head in the 500. Ande has more overall speed than I do right now ..... so I think that the 500 is my best chance (if there is any chance at all?).... but what the heck.... I can't just roll over and submit defeat to an ex longhorn now can I!!??" Should I accept? ande
  • the bet is a beer a second so if he goes 4:35 and I go 4:55 i'll owe him 20 beers If I go 4:45 and he goes 5:05 he owes me 20 beers the rounding is to deal with the 10ths in our time difference there is only a 1 in 100 chance that he and I would be exactly 1.0 or 2.0 or 3.0 or ? what ever it will be seconds apart ande Originally posted by 330man Why does there need to be any rounding? Each of you will complete the event in a specific time and the fastest time wins. What is there to round off?
  • maybe you should go with Beat Raz Bury his AZZ the rhyme makes it catchier so are you gonna begin the "bork blog?" to let me know how your training is going? Ande Originally posted by newmastersswimmer So it is now official I suppose. I will of course agree to your beer and/or milkshake terms (as well as the part about sharing the winnings....afterall this is supposedly a civil challenge of some sort).....And we will follow the rounding rules you outlined as well. As far as the swimming faster faster tip you refer too.....Well, although I am a big fan of your swimming tips overall.....I was never very good at that particular one....and on that note....my new mantra at workout will be: Beat the Raz.....Bury the horns Beat the Raz.....Bury the horns Beat the Raz.....Bury the horns Newmastersswimmer p.s. Thanks Leonard for sticking up for your fellow math geek!!....We math geeks have to stick together....especially when it comes to doing battle with certain forms of Evil.....most specifically the burnt orange variety!
  • OK jim the bet it's on who ever swims the fastest 500 time between now and the 2006 USMS short course nats if we both go to the meet we'll enter at the same time and have a true showdown i'm fine with one beer per second, though if the winner doesn't drink we can modify it to one milkshake per second. The winner can share his winnings. He doesn't have to drink it all at one sitting. So what time are you training to beat? Just to clarify, the loser, (the one with the slower time) owes the winner (the one with the faster time) Now what should we do about the 10ths of a second difference? a. round up b. round down c. follow typical math rounding rules for 0.01 - 0.49 round down for 0.50 - 0.99 round up ANY WAY THE BET IS ON beat bork hook em beat bork hook em beat bork hook em Ande PS didn't you read the swim faster faster tip about don't RILE your competition? Originally posted by newmastersswimmer Raz, I'm placing a six pack on you to win. I'm telling you right now..... as your team captain for life...... you must crush him. Remember, it's not about winning. It's about embarassing the enemy. It's about pure ego. I want a clear and decisive Longhorn victory out of you or I'm telling Eddie. You will wear a burnt orange Longhorn cap for this event, and I will be behind your lane when you finish. After the meet, I take you to get a Longhorn tatoo on your back. Losing will cost you an extra six-pack and verbal abuse on the forum for 1 year. posted by the GoodSmith I have to say that I do like your no mercy/cut throat attitude Mr. GoodSmith.......I expect nothing less from a true ex-longhorn! Unfortunately I have my own plans.......As far as messing up Ande's sprint events......I feel that if he is going to train for the 400 IM, then he is already going to be simultaneously training for the 500 free in many respects....(not exactly....but pretty much so).....So he doesn't really need to alter his training plans IMHO. I really like Ande.....he is a very nice guy and a very fast swimmer. I am apparently a glutton for punishment......I just don't know any better I guess. It is my duty as a representative of the smaller mid-major schools to take on the Longhorn Evil whenever possible......Since beating the GoodSmith in something like a 100 free or a 100 IM is completely beyond all reason, I have to pick my longhorn challenges so that I have "perhaps" a snowball's chance of winning......even if it is only a snowball's chance......I am aware that Ande is more than a formidable enough opponent.....I will be ready. Newmastersswimmer p.s. I am willing to modify the bet to include one beer per half second and/or the extra scotch requirements suggested by Aquageek......Upside down Margaritas can also be employed as well.....Basically whatever Ande will agree too.

if we both go to the meet we'll enter at the same time and have a true showdown If? This doesn't sound like much of a committment to me. C'mon, book the plane tickets...reserve the hotel. We're counting on some excitement. You can't mail it in. Not that I have anything to do with it...

2nd place finisher = LOSER! I believe Jim is a UT fan (the Rocky Top variety) and though I can hardly stomach that song, gotta go with the SEC. War Eagle!

Here is a link to Bork's Training Blog: borktrainingblog.blogspot.com/ Newmastersswimmer p.s. We will surely include Keather in the drinking activities following the SCY Nationals in Coral Gables....Yes...I also agree that Ande and I should face off there as well.....It sounds like GoodSmith and Bobby Patten may also have a 500 free rematch there as well!!......Some good healthy testosterone fueled competition never hurt anyone....right??
