Competitive swimming with new shoulder?

Perhaps someone can assist. A swimming colleague of mine recently 'smashed' his shoulder (literally) and is now awaiting a replacement shoulder joint. Does anyone know whether it's possible to regain full 'competitive' swimming abilities with an artificial shoulder? Thanks

Not too sure but I have seen the procedure done and it's not pretty (Obviously don't share that part with your friend). I don't see any reason why somebody could not swim but I suspect that the artificial pieces might wear out more quickly with a lot of overhead use. The procedure I saw was a replacement of the humeral head and the glenoid fossa I believe. I wish your friend the best of luck and I suspect that his ortho should be able to answer the questions about post operative activity.
