CLOSING CEREMONY
I don't why everyone thinks there is something wrong with Phelps. Last night I saw his SF swim on CBC and he took his 200 Free out and did not hold back like I believe he did in the 400 Free. His time was 1:46.33 which is a qualifying best for a SF and a second ahead of everyone for tonights final. Judging from this swim, I think he will win tonight. I believe CBC is going to highlight this event because Brent Hayen made it to finals as a suprise in 6th and Ric Say who was suppose to make it did not.
Emillo Brembilla is the second qualifer and Australians Sprenger and Hackett are 3rd and 4th. Ryk Neethling is 5th, Lin Zhang from China is 7th and Peter VanderKay is 8th as the outside smoke.
On the CBC coverage last night they showed the Men's 400 Free Relay, Men' 50 Fly, Men's 200 Free semi of both heats. They showed the Men's 100 Back semi for both heats also. They finished up with the Women's 200 IM final where Katie Hoff set an American Record and recorded the 2nd fastest time in history.
The two events they did not show had World Record performances in them. Jessica Hardy in the 100 *** SF, in which she shatted the American Record by almost a second. Hopefully, they will show the final tonight. And the Men's 100 *** final, which I believe has become the hottest rivalry in swimming, replacing the Alexandar Popov vs Gary Hall Jr. one. I am hoping I can see this race as a rerun because we can see Brendan Hansen swim like he did at Long Beach last year.
The commentating is excellent. Steve Armitage and Bryon MacDonald really get into the swimming. Sometimes they mispronounce names but they do real well together as a team with play by play and analysis. They are a little different than NBC with Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines because they reverse roles sometimes and Hicks and Gaines usaually don't. I like both teams for different reasons.
With the sucess of this meet so far with World Records being set every day, maybe, just maybe FOX Sports might show some sort of tape delayed coverage of highlighted events on there main network at the end of August before College Football starts. I know that the 1991, 1994, and 1998 FINA World Championships were shown tape delayed with highlighted events shown only. In 2001, there was nothing from Fukoua, Japan for USA TV. ESPN and ESPN2 were excellent with there coverage in 2003, similar to what FOX College Sports Net is doing now.
