It depends where I am going and what type of vacation it is. In Iceland, for example, swimming is their national sport, and there are great pools everywhere, even in small towns. We were on a small group tour, but we had free time in the afternoons. We were encouraged to spend that time at the local pool and meet the locals. I brought along a bunch of the USMS caps I had accumulated from various events, and I gave them away to to local swimmers I met in the pool. It was a lot of fun and one of the most memorable parts of the trip! If you are curious about that experience, I wrote some blog posts about it at ElainesTravels.com . Enter "Iceland" in the search box. (I do not monetize my blog, so ads will appear.)
If I am on a small group tour in a country where there aren't hotel pools or local public pools, I enjoy doing a lot of walking instead. I also do dryland exercises when time permits.
Places2swim.com is a great resource, and I use it all the time! To supplement it, I do a Copilot (AI) search for the closest pools around where I am staying. Sometimes, I will get a hit on a pool that is not on places2swim.
