Masters Swim Team in Uruguay - Natacion Maldonado

I will be in La Barra/Punta Del Este/Maldonado, Uruguay, for 3 months in 2026 and found the natacion maldonado masters team that I would love to train with during that time. Unfortunately, I could only find an instagram account and I wanted to see if anybody here has a contact to that team.

If you have a contact, even through other swimmers, I would appreciate any and all connections.

  • I’ve actually had a ton of success swimming with clubs overseas after reaching out through Instagram and Facebook. Have you given it a try yet?

  • yes I've reached out through IG and someone actually responded, but they didn't state a name, nor a true contact, nor any details that would help me actually being able to join them.

  • Question - I didn’t really want to start a new thread.  But why is this forum so lame now?  I remember 15 years ago there was a lot of activity.  Now I am back out of semi-retirement and have a lot to talk about.
Seems I can only post under my real name?  Not sure I am really comfortable if that is the case.  Maybe that is why it is dead?

  • I have a friend from Uruguay who still has family and friends there, and visits often. I’ve got your question to him on the outside chance that he knows a swimmer in the area. But, he’s on a camino walk through Portugal right now so I’m not sure when he’ll respond. In the meantime, I checked the Places2Swim website (www.places2swim.com)…which is usually pretty good for finding pools. POCs, info on teams that use them, etc. It looks like there aren’t even many pools in the area. The info for that one says something to the effect that it takes four weeks to get medical access to the place. Looks like your best bet might be the drive over to the Montevideo area. Awaiting my friend’s response. — Dan

  • WOW! My friend DOES know an avid masters-age swimmer in Uru. (It’s a small country). He connected us via Facebook and I’ve asked your question for a POC. Now I’m awaiting his response.

  • Dave — Not to hijack the thread, but early on there was discussion about this very topic since they changed the discussion forum software a number of years ago. A discussion forum that once had multiple daily posts and responses came to almost a standstill, and will sometimes go days…even weeks without a post. I’m sure you’d get others to discuss it further. I suggest you initiate a new/separate thread for it. — Dan

  • and that's why I love this community. Awesome. Thanks so much! Fingers crossed he can find out some info.
The pool I found looks to be one of the bigger ones in Uruguay. Maldonado Campus. 50m. They seem to have lots of meets there. But I don't know if this is the pool they are training at.
Punta Del Este/Maldonado area would be my preferred location since Montevideo is a 90min drive from La Barra.

  • The person in Uruguay responded to me, and said he will ask around and get back to me.

  • FYI, I checked with my contact last night (9/3/25) to see if he’d gotten any info. His response was “not yet.” So I presume he’s still looking into it.

  • Here is the response from my friend’s friend in Uruguay —

My coach just gave me the contact information for the masters swimming coach in Maldonado. I don’t know him and I don’t know much about it. But from what I understood your friend will need to become a member of the club and at that time he’ll be able to train with them. Here’s the contact information and if your friend is interested in following up I advice to let me know first so I can reach out to him and tell him that someone from the US will contact him and tell him what’s going on.

His name is Juan Moreno Fun (pronounced “phoon”). He is a swimming coach in swimming pool and open water. Phone +598 99 051 741

This is another group of swimmers that swim around the “muelle mailhos” in the Punta del Este area. No coach.

    I hope that helps out.
