Well…it’s better than breakdancing that’s for sure. And I’m not ‘trolling’ here, or making fun of events that anyone swims. If you’re swimming at the level of the Olympics in ANY event you’re certainly an outstanding swimmer. But…and I know you’ll all blast me for this…I just don’t find the 50 meter races in the pool all that compelling. At the world-class level, it just seems that success or failure all comes down to the swimmer’s start. There isn’t enough “swimming” for swimming and racing abilities to come into play. Maybe it happens…I’ve never seen it…but it seems the winner is determined by the first one that hits the water. And again…I’d rather see events like this added rather than something like breakdancing. — Dan
Yea, it's ok but I'm not wildly excited. The rest of the sporting world already thinks swimming has too many medal events. Now we are adding three more, two of which are underwater dolphin kicking and one of which is an exercise is seeing who has the best pullout. Better than competitive climbing though. I've done lots of rock climbing (on actual rock) in my life. The idea of making climbing an Olympic sport just sits wrong with me, but I am getting off topic.

This is off topic, but actually, IMO, I’d say that climbing makes a good fit in the Olympics. That is as long as the winner is determined by time or distance. The ancient games were originally contested among soldiers, in the various things that soldiers were required to do in the line of duty — run, jump, vault over barricades, throw spears (javelin) and handle catapult ammunition (shot put), archery, horseback riding, maneuver boats, swim, etc. And I’d suppose that scaling hills, cliffs, and walls would be expected of them. So considering that…I’d say climbing belongs in the Olympics. It’s events that have to be judged, and aren’t determined by a time or distance measurement that I don’t think fit the ideal of the original Olympics. — Dan
I can appreciate that perspective. Never liked judged sports too much. Sure, gymnastics and figure skating look nice, but too much subjectivity and politics in determining the winner. Swimming is the ultimate no-BS sport. There is minimal gear. Competitors are stripped to being nearly naked. First one to the wall wins. You can be overweight, purple, and from East-southeast nowhere. If you get your hand on the wall first, you win. I have 2 major complaints about swimming: 1) Getting into the pool is unpleasant. 2) I'm not faster!
