Creating stamina or endurance

I have reviewed the responses to this subject in the community and my question comes from a new swimming wanting to know what I need to do to improve my stamina/endurance.  I have been swimming about 3 years and I am up to a mile four times a week.  I would like any suggestion or confirmation that I just need keep working on my technique and my hours of swimming will help me improve my stamina/endurance.  Thank you.

  • Congratulations on your progress and choosing swimming as your fitness activity!

You made a smart choice to learn better stroke technique.  The better technique you have when you swim, the more efficient you will be in the water, and that will help with your endurance.  It will also prevent injuries, which is very important!

In addition to the excellent advice you have already received here, keep focusing on technique.  Watch the excellent instructional videos USMS offers on this site; you can also find their channel on YouTube.  If you can find somebody to shoot video of your swimming, have them shoot you from the side of the pool and the end of the pool, so you can see your stroke technique.  Compare your stroke to the swimmers in the USMS videos to see what you are doing well and what can use improvement.  This is the best way to improve your technique if you aren't on a Masters team or have a coach.  Please post your videos on this thread, too, so we can take a look at your stroke and offer suggestions on how you can improve.

    Good luck!

Huge, huge factor we've all been remiss in not saying from the get-go.  Absolutely true, and I still struggle with technique, and end up hurting myself.  Can't be reiterated enough.

I really enjoy Gary Hall, Sr's videos.  I think it is The Race Club.  I learned so much from his videos, it is amazing.  But if you don't have access to a coach, then online videos are absolutely a big help.  And like Elaine said, take some, there are folks here (MUCH smarter than me!) who can give you some feedback!
