Hey everybody! Alright this is kind of a weird question and I hope I don't gross anyone out. I got a shammy for Christmas (LOVE IT) and I've been using it for about the past 3 monthes maybe 4 times a week. I ring it out as best I can, and store it (in the orginally little plastic tube) damp like the package says. However, lately it has been smelling kind of funny. Are you supposed to wash them? I have never washed mine, never thought I had too, but then it started smelling. It smelled when I first got it, and it's pretty much the same odor only a little stronger. Thanx!

p.s. Hope that's not to gross, of a weird question.
Did you drink the wash water afterwards? Did it taste like mold or vinegar?
For such a hygenic sport, some of you swimmers sure are gross. Not washing a chamois for 4 months is rather sickening.

When you live something in the trunk and during the day the temperature rise very hot, anything that is wet is going to smell, so try to leave your car under a roof so the sun do not gets it.
I have a Sammy since 4 years ago and it has never smell, but I wash it while I am at the showers after swimming.
Nothing happends to a Sammy if you wash it, except that may be will last longer, as you are not going to throw it away because it gets black dots for fungi.

That's just nasty geek. Drinking the water, c'mon! And it's wasn't 4 months it was 3. Besides, all I wanted to know was that it wasn't going to ruin it. I'm sure you have your bad habits too!! :o
(and no one ever said you had to read the thread)

Why would a swimmer use a sammy? Coz it's compact, stores easily and quickly after your swim, doesn't take eons to dry (coz it always stored damp) and doesn't require frequent washings. Some stores/brands also call it a Sports Towel.

If you treat it like any other towel, squeeze the water out of it and let it dry out in an airy space it will be just fine for a long time.
Let me get this straight, you repeatedly dry yourself with this thing and wring it out and, whamo, it's somehow now clean? That's nasty!
I honestly don't think I've missed out on many smells lately having two young children.
I am planning on purchasing one for a meet but then plan on washing it immediately thereafter. I'm clean like that.
Yet, oddly enough you take a shower with soap but don't wash the funky small chamois ever that you use prior to showering. Further proof of a class 4 yuck factor.
Now children! :p
Don't forget when traveling to away meets that you need only bring your one, big favorite towel AND a chamois- because you can use the hotel towels!!!
