I used to be an astronomer. Drew paychecks from the US National Observatory (in Tucson), University of Hawaii, the Max Planck Institut in Germany, the University of Wyoming and the Navy at various times during my 40 years of employment. It was fun and kept me from ever having to hold a real, worthwhile job. Now, I don't do anything but train, eat good food and drink excellent CA wines. Where did I go wrong? posted by Meldyck Wow, that is a very fascinating field to me Mel. If I had a chance to do it all over again, astronomy would be right up there at the very top of the list. I can't get enough of the shows on t.v. about astronomy via the Science channel ...etc.. What was your specialty if you don't mind me asking? Were you more low frequency astronomy or perhaps high frequency astronomy? (like x-ray and gamma ray astronomy?) Newmastersswimmer
  • Another geek girl... I'm a chemical engineer currently on a 2-yr leave from the evil corporate empire to take care of kidlet #1. To support my swimming habit, I also run our swim team's website and teach fibromyalgia and prenatal aqua aerobics at the fitness center. Yes, occasionally, I AM that person instructing the folks to use noodles in the pool!!
  • Four,my wife is a science geek. We met as lab partners in college, then decided we wanted to go into medicine instead of basic science. Then we married and went through med school together. posted by Allen Stark Wow, thats so romantic Allen. Two Medical Science Geeks meet in the lab, fall in love, and then go to Med School.....You can't write a better script than that. I guess I can forgive you then for being an evil breaststroker...LOL!! Another geek girl... Newmastersswimmer I would just like to say that I am from a whole family of medical and science geeks. I thought about medical school briefly (hard not to where I grew up), but I'm just a classic liberal arts girl. I hope you won't all hold it against me.
  • What did you major in? I was an English and German major (before selling my soul to the business world!);) Barb: Government and philosophy. Minor in art history. My college tour de force was writing an epic dialogue between Plato, Aristotle and some other philosopher that I can't remember now on the topic of legal philosophy. Definitely a liberal arts geek. I did take astronomy in college to fulfill my science requirement -- we called it "Stars for Studs." (Before selling my soul to law school. ;) ) Jim-Bo: I'm so glad there's room in your heart for those of us glaringly deficient in the mathematical arts! You will always be my favorite math geek and 200 fly stud.

I'm the director of a research company. We pay people to answer our questions. And then I am paid to look at the answers to the questions that we have paid people to answer and then ask more questions we pay people to answer. Which I then look at. All clear? Good.
  • I kind of fell into it when I couldn't figure out how to get through graduate school in either math or physics... The only piece of advice I ever heeded from my dad, given as we passed by the Physics Building at UMD as he was dropping me off at my dorm for Freshmeat move-in day: Jeff, whatever you do, stay out of that building. Thought about being an architect. Physics I required for admission to studio. Thought about being a meterologist. Physics I & II required. After a stint in CompSci, ended up at the Business School. No Physics
