How about this year we don't dedicate so many lanes to slower swimmers in warm up. Last year there were about 4 end lanes out of the total 16 lanes dedicated to the slowest older swimmers. That's 25% of the entire warmup space !
We need a better way to keep the slow people in the slow lanes and the faster people in the faster lanes during warm up. Warm up turns worthless after the first 10 minutes.

here's the perfect solution
Let's just reserve one lane at nationals for john and his posse have a guest list and a set of written rules Each guest will sign an affadavit that they will adhere to the rules and vouch it with a substantial security deposit. we'll place a velvet rope at each end with four gigantic-body- builder-roid-rage bouncers.

Plus have 2 observers at 25 and 50 feet along the side video taping and looking for rule violators to boot.
it's the perfect solution.

I like it!!.....How can we get a membership to be part of this posse? Is there a sign up sheet going around yet?.....I have some spare cash for the security deposit....just let me know where to mail the check.....I suppose we make the check out to John Smith....(or maybe just the "GoodSmith"?).....Does Paul Smith (AKA THe "BadSmith") also get to be part of this posse as well?......or is he automatically excluded for obvious reasons?

John,
I'm not attached to lane 4, I'll bid my hard-earned $1.00 on lane 5 :p (OK, I found it in the laundry, so it wasn't really hard earned!)
Just a thought- I wonder how many fat cat millionaires are Masters swimmers? I know we have several on our team... I wonder in all of Masters? I bet it's a lot.
I, myself, will never be in that category unless, like Scansy suggested I win the Lottery :) And if I do, I'm fighting for Lane 4! :p
Don't be fooled by all the lies the "true" evil is spouting, being a nasty bean counter he's known by his coworkers and the 1-2 firends he (the rich nasty lawyer being one) has as a chain smoking hard ass that will say anything to cause turmoil!
John, its bad enough we got one loud mouth texan spouting off on this forum but having you two tag teaming is a bit much.
By the way Karen, John is used to always having his own lane because he pee's in the pool!
Tall Paul
first of all great swims down under, you are redefining new possibilities in the 45 - 49 age group, I applaud your accomplishments and the work you put in to make them happen.
now I have a question:
Am I the "other" loud mouth texan you're referring to?
If I am, how can I be loud mouthed if I'm just typing?
It's my understanding Fort Lauderdale is going to fill the pool with the chemical that turns bright purple when it reacts with uric acid released by those who lack sphincter control.
The posse patrol will do dual duty serving as the potty patrol.

*** dog, sucking on straws is nothing new for you, I've seen you knock back more than a few in your days at the U
I think you're gonna take him in the 500, maybe you should get a fast skin II to improve your odds. He only went 1:54 in the 200 free at zones. True it was the last event of the last day and he might have been tuckered.
hey the googles thing will be a tip, make sure you googles don't malfunction, whether by leaking or fogging or getting blown off
can't wait to read those results.

Those things only apply to younger athletes that are in great shape. They have nothin to do with Masters swimmers and longer events at high elevations.
The longer the swim at altitude the proportionately worse you get if you are older (i.e. over 30) and/or don't swim a lot (i.e. most masters swimmers). I felt great for about 8 lengths on my 1000, then the piano dropped. The 500 was another issue. My goggles were leaking and I was emptying them every 3rd length. Even so, I wouldn't have been under 5:00.
Dude, altitude is like swimming on another planet. I have been here for about 4 years and I still hang on the edge during repeat sets like an old man...... then again...... I am an old man.
No matter..... I have my beer money saved up for Bobby. I'll set it on the chair behind my block during the race in an envelope. He'll probably be out of the water first to grab it..... :-)
I think my 200 will be the best race this year actually.

Either you are typing very loud, or mouthing the words as you type them. :D
I'm aware of the beneficial effects of altitude training. It's the only way I can hang with the Evil Smith each year at Masters Nationals. Let's you feel like your 30 when you're 43... :-) for a day or to anyway.
After living in Denver the last 4 year, I submit to you that long term training year after year at altitude is not as beneficial as you may think. Unless you are extremely talented, young and in great shape, it is next to impossible to come close to race pace in workouts. You end up practicing swimming slow........ which is not good. originally posteed by the GoodSmith
I see your point.....I've never trained at altitude ever in my life so I can't relate to what it must be like exactly....but I get the idea....certainly the mouth glued to a straw metaphor helps me to get a picture of what it might be like.....sounds rough!.....I can say that I am use to working out in very hot YMCA water though...which has a similar effect on making you workout slower than optimal......your body can't expell the excess heat when your swimming in 89 - 90 degree water!
Well at least there's the skiing, hiking, mountain biking...Whitewater rafting, and so many other cool activities to enjoy in CO to make up for the difficult training environment. My brother lives in Ft. Collins and so I travel to CO on occaission to visit.....We always have a blast when I come.....Trout fishing in the mountain streams!!......I can almost taste them when I think about it.........I'll trade places with you anytime you want!

originally posted by Tall Paul ....The "Evil" Smith?...It's confusing?
I am a little confused now?.....Is it the altitude that makes John hug the wall like an old man gasping for every breath he can at workouts....or is it the chain smoking?......I just watched the Exorcist The Beggining the other night...and I learned that the true evil beings are masters of lying and deception....the problem is, I can't tell who is the real evil here (and thus who is the true force of good?)...who is telling the truth and who is deceiving us.....Like Ying and Yang the two Smiths are opposing forces of US Masters swimming....(they are apparently equally matched for the most part as far as I can tell)...one must be evil and the other good .....But if good always defeats evil in the long run....then based on last year's Nationals.....(Paul won 2 of the 3 head to head match ups last year between the Smiths (I believe?))...So doesn't that make Paul the GoodSmith then?....

O.k......I think I've finally figured out who is the "True" Evil Smith (and hence who then must be the "True" Good Smith)........It's been hard to figure out exactly based on the accusations coming from both sides....but it was Mr. Good Smith's last posting under the top 12 Masters swimmers thread that finally made it all crystal clear!!.....Anyone who would buy somebody's kid a Florida Gators Shirt is PURE EVIL!!!...I really hope you burned it and took the ashes somewhere far away from your home!!....Also I hope you bathed your son in tomato juice for at least 3 hours!....Please Don't tell me that The supposed Evil Smith (Paul) swam for Florida??...........Sorry Paul....Your an amazing swimmer at 45 years of age (no one can deny that!!)....I am soooo sorry I ever questioned your side of the story Mr. G.S......I promise it will NEVER happen again!!
