My twin brother is a former swimmer and current artist, and I told him about the "Meaning of Swimming" thread on this forum. I also told him how at night when I try to get to sleep, I will sometimes visualize myself flowing through the water, very relaxed, effortless in the blue water.
John has been working on digital art in recent years, and he did a semi-abstract animation that gets some of this feeling across. I invite one and all to take a look at his website:
www.jrtart.com
Once you log on, click on "animation galleries" and scrowl down until you see one with a picture of a sunset, then play this.
It probably works best if you have a cable or DSL modem, otherwise it can take a while to view it. If you check it out, let me know what you think and I will forward your comments to John. He said he may try to do some more swimming art in the future. Thanks.

Funny, that you mention your visualization technique to get to sleep. Sometimes when my mind is actively thinking about things and keeping me awake, I start thinking about swimming technique. It keeps my mind distracted from the problems of the day and knocks me out pretty quickly.
BTW, your brother is doing some interesting animations. He should make some screensavers.
