In 1966 I had a sponsor for my swimming and even made a television ad for them which was going to pay big bucks. I thought I had hit the jack pot. Every time it showed 13 times I was to receive $75.00 and I was told it would appear at least 35 times a day and as many as 200 times a day accross Canada. The add played for 10 days and it was going to be good. After it ran for ten days, I was watching the news.... Dow Brewery destroys 4,546,000 litres of beer after 16 people die in Quebec City area; 1 million gallons go down the drain, so did my TV ad and this sponsor.

That's an amazing story, George. I had never heard of this before. I did a little research and apparently Dow was using cobalt sulfate for head retention in their beer. People who drank an extremely large amount of beer were poisoned by the cobalt.

Click on the link called "Beer Deaths." I was particularly interested because I've done a lot of reading on beer and homebrewing and was under the impression that there's no way beer can kill you. Well, I guess when you add a poison to it it can!
It would be nice to have a sponsor.But you need to be really good these days to get one!I think a lot of talent is lost because of the money issue, since you reach the point in life where ther are other priorities and you need to establish a career outside swimming to make the living which obviously takes away from swimming.The best swimmers these days do sport FOR A LIVING!That must be so cool, tough!Even in college you will not see many swimmers(the ones representing their alma mater) working jobs.Swimming is a full-time job...
Thank goodness, it was my favorite beer when I lived in Quebec. My wife and I would split a pint of beer between the two of us two or three times a week. Of course Dow Brewry went out of business after that even though they had medals from Europe saying it was the best tasting beer in the world.

You had to be good then or you never had a sponsor. I was always rated in the top 6 marathon swimmers in the world, I quit full time teaching swimming for six months so I could train and race. I owned a swim school were I, my staff and wife would teach 4000 kids and adults a year. My sponsors looked after all my expenses for travel, food and lodging plus a little more. The Dow Beer ad would have made it a bit nicer. I was one of three of the pros who had sponsors.

8 QUARTS OF BEER A DAY?!?! That is enough to kill anyone regardless of the beer being tainted or not. Drinking that much everyday is only going to speed up any alcohol related illness or alcohol poisoning.
