I was offered a presciption for steroids in 1952. I went to the library and found out what they were and I told my doctor no.
I knew all kinds of athletes who took them I don't think any one really benefitted from their use.

I don't think we need to worry about this in swimming. A below average left handed MLB pitcher can make millions upon millions and have a great career that sets him, his kids and his grandkids up for life. There is a lot of incentive to do crazy things in big time pro sport (even though Barry denies it, of course). A below average swimmer is not encumbered by swimming as a profession and can make whatever he wants in the field that he/she wants.
