Hello - I'm new to this board. I recently took up swimming again (did it a lot (competitively) in my much, much younger days), and have dabbled here and there for the past 6 years or so, but I'm now doing more regular workouts at a local indoor pool. I started because I'm a runner currently off land with a stress fracture, so while doing pool running I noticed the masters workouts going on and decided to join in for the added crosstraining.
It turns out that this coach is great. The workouts generally have 3 to 8 people, and being new, I'm always in Lane 1 getting constant input on my stroke, which has already changed. He really pushes us pretty hard, doing all strokes, lots of drills and intervals - definitely good for lactate threshold workouts, endurance, and V02 max (things I relate to in running).
I was wondering, if you care to share, what you pay for masters workouts, and what you get for that (how many days per week, additional pool time at no extra cost, etc.).
And, a couple more questions if you don't mind: Any benefits to joining USMS if you are not planning on doing swim meets? (I'm planning on doing a triathlon here and there, hence the swimming.)
And, kickboards: cheap foam okay, or any difference in what's out there?
Thanks for any input!!

I pay $515 per year for a YMCA membership. A six-month membership on the masters swim team at the Y is $60 for one 1.5 hour coached practice per week or $110 for two 1.5 hour coached practices per week.
$65.00 per month or $650.00 annually for 11 available coached masters' workouts per week, unlimited access to lap swimming and access to weight room at aquatic center (two fifty meter pools available for training, one kept at 78 for serious training, the other warmer.
well, first off, it's good to see other "aqua lions" out there ;)
but i had no idea it would get so feisty on this thread! don't get me wrong, i love living in state college, but in general, i just dig college towns. doesn't matter- north, south, new england, mountain west, pacific, northwest. it's just the atmosphere that a college town brings that i love.
i've never been to athens (but i hear many good things about it!) and i like chapel hill; i'm just a cold weather girl at heart! hence the choice to stay in state college...
but...I suggest you go to Tallahassee, Chapel Hill or Athens in early April before you make such brash statements. Even my PSU friends say it doesn't hold a candle to some of the fairer college towns in the South, where the talent is vastly superior. geek, that was a bit harsh! especially if the talent comment was related to football. and if it's related to collegiate swimming, give our nittany lions some time- they're moving up in the rankings every season...
fight on state!
The talent comment had absolutely nothing to do with sports.
What polls are you looking at, btw, where the Nittany Lions are climbing? Are you reading the paper upside down the past few years?

I pay $45 per month for membership to the Boise Y with no charge for Masters Swimming, family membership is $70. We have 14 coached workouts a week Monday thru Saturday.
Now, that is one heck of a good deal. Is the pool any good?

obviously i'm not talking football here... which pains me to have to admit, but it's the truth. and honestly, i was talking about the lady lions, not so much the nittany lions. when i swam for PSU, being ranked at all was a big deal. now, we're consistenly (albeit slowly) climbing in the rankings. and when you take a look at the outdated facilities that the varsity teams are stuck with, it's a miracle that the coaching staff is able to recruit any decent swimmers at all- female or male... but that's a whole 'nother ball of wax.
and i think we need to get back on topic of this post!!! IMHO at least.

Good to know, Dee. My husband's job is talking about transfering him there. Of course the first thing I looked up was where to swim in Boise.
:D
And Lainey, I had the pleasure of dancing with Michael Stipe about 12 years ago at an Athens bar. He was friends with one of my friends. I'll never forget that night! The other band members were drunk at the bar :p
