How good a swimmer do you need to be to join masters? (And to fit in reasonably well, or at least not stick out like a sore thumb! :D ) I know I could never keep up with a masters group now, but it would be nice to have a goal to work toward. Do you need to swim all four strokes? How about stamina/endurance/speed? Can anyone give me an idea of what a baseline level would be?

Here in Dallas, one of the local Masters groups offers monthly swim clinics for beginners and intermediate levels targetted at people who are not currently Masters members. The clinic meets twice a week, and you pay for a month at a time. It's much cheaper than private lessons. A couple of months ago, I could barely make it across the pool, and I did not feel like could comfortably join a Masters team. The clinics really helped with my technique, fitness, and confidence; and there is more focused coaching from Masters coaches than in some general learn-to-swim class. Take a look in your area to see if such a program is available from a local Masters group. It's a great way for intimidated people to overcome the barrier to joining Masters, and the Masters group benefits from getting members that might not have joined otherwise.
