A friend of mine fractured a metatarsal bone in her hand. She will have the waterproof cast off in 4 weeks right before her 10 day winter training camp with her team. She would like to know how much swimming she can do in that time, can she swim at all and if so how much etc? Thanks for the great advice I always get from this board.

A metatarsal bone is in the foot. A metacarpal bone is in a human hand OR the front foot of a quadruped.
The 2nd poster caught the correction.
Marcia, I would have her check with her Dr. first.
My question would be, which metacarpal bone (of which finger) did she break? How long ago did it happen? When the cast comes off, has there been enough healing and union of the bone? Most likely it will not be a problem as the hand is not a weightbearing structure in swimming. But again, when in doubt, check with the MD first. Good luck to her! :)
