Just had to give something for us northerns to write about.
You know you are swimming in the north when you go for a polar bear swim.

swim was not an "official" event. You may have been able to find it on the Allegheny Mountain Masters main page (go to places to swim--click on PA--click on Allegheny Mt. Masters {1st line}.
There are maybe 3 events per year (the CMU meet usually in January, the JCC Short-course Y meet in March-April and the JCC Long-course in August) that aren't really sanctioned events. They are usually coordinated by one of the members of the JCC who also swims for Y-Masters. You can contact the JCC for the non-CMU meets but they also know about the CMU meet.
USMS doesn't seem to be real popular in the Pittsburgh area. They do swim at the University of Pittsburgh facility but no local meets (meaning in Allegheny Co. or surrounding counties).
There is a contact, I believe, on the Allegheny Mountain Masters page for the local Y representative.
swim 53- if you're from eastern PA (delaware river to about state college/altoona), check the delaware valley masters home page (dvmasters.org). if you're anywhere else in PA, you'd be in the allegheny masters. i'm not sure what their web page is...
anyways, you know you're swimming in the north when you beg your coach to have practice outside in 40 degrees and rain, just because the long course pool is open. and it's april 5th. (god bless PSU varsity swimming!! ;-)
or, you know you're swimming in the north when you won't be wearing open toed shoes for at least 4.5 months because of the snow, but you paint your toenails anyways. seeing as how all your teammates will be seeing your feet anyways... (ladies, you know what i mean!)
Thank you for the info. So, if I'd like to swim in a meet, I could do so as a non-association member? How do I get info on the individual meet? I'm assuming these are non-recognized or non-sanctioned meets like we used to have in NW Ohio. I belong to USMS and to a YMCA.
Also, does anyone know which pool is being used for the National Senior Games in June?

I tried to send you a message but it says you are full. To participate in an AMYMSA meet you have to be affliated with a participating Y. Where do you live?
I am not sure where the Senior games will be but I might be able to find out if you would like. Msgrupp might know.
for the entire United States are to be in Pittsburgh this June 05. Sponsors include the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
The qualifying events (for those over 50) were held this past year. The qualifying period was 1/1/2004 to 12/30/2004. I have a few friends who will be participating this year and qualified last August.
If you do a search on "Senior Games"--the information may come up.

Thanks for the info, both of you. I
am a member of a Y but not an affliliated Y.
I will swim at the Senior meet in June in Pitt- I qualified last summer but didn't have the brochure handy and wondered about the venue.
