The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

I once met a lady named Swimmy I mistook her for a Bill, Brad, or Timmy The fact that she loved to rhyme Nearly all of of the time Was defintely a sure fire Gimmie

Great job with the new poems Swimmy, Seagurl and newmastersswimmer! Here's one for Toni: There once was a swimmer called Thorpe Middle distance freestyle he rules Everyone must beware For he sets fire to all the pools His rivals are called by the names of Keller, Hoogie, and Hackett But whenever they go head to head Thorpe's the master; he wears the green jacket But, Thorpie beware the new pup whose versatility has proven unique We saw it this summer in Athens And he hasn't yet reached his peak!

Yeah....Thorpe might wear the green jacket... But so does my idol, Hackett He's the King of the Mile - to watch him is SO worthwhile When it comes to the world record, he'll sack it!!

Now I'm on a role...(way too much coffee....): There once was a swimmer named Beard Who posed for some "guys" magazine...(some people think that's weird) I think it's great - I say, "you go girl, before it's way too late!" But in the pool, she's a chick to be feared!

The sting of chlorine The icy spray It's 5 in the morning What a way to start the day. The calmness The serenity How I could be here For all eternity. The meditation The motion Whether it be in a pool Or in the ocean. What a sport to have What a thing to share And with so many posts It's nice to know someone cares!

My sentiments exactly! Very clever poem by the way!....especially the way you ended it on a non-rhyming word for extra emphasis! I am guessing that some people may either be "all rhymed out" or just needing a little break from the poetry EXPLOSION that has went off here over the past so many days. This currently is the longest thread on the entire discussion board I believe??....(Can you believe what you started iSWIMinDREAMS?!). I am still expecting that Sonic Swimmer is going to regail us with some of those swimming parodies he teased us about earlier? (right Sonic Swimmer??) newmastersswimmer

OK gang....here are the first two verses to my "new" poem, sung to the tune of Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" - (OK everybody, I need some help with the rest of this thing....) I like big fins and I cannot lie You other swimmers can’t deny That when the coach walks in with those itty bitty fins And great big giant kick set you get bummed Wanna pretend you’re tough but ya know ya’ll ain’t got enough It’s those big fins ya wanna be wearin’ You’re tired and ya can’t stop swearin’ “Hey Ya coach! I’m in the wrong lane!” These guys are a pain My toes they keep on touchin’ It’s noon and I should be lunchin’!......:D (is it Friday yet...?)
