The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

That was beautiful!! I agree that we should make this a regular, reccuring section. I know it has given me something to look forward too! ~Kyra p.s. newmastersswimmer-sorry i never responded! No i missed the game the other day, it sounds like it was a good one though. To score 6 points it had to be!

justforfun - Excellent poem and truly sums up probably many of our thoughts. Love the part about "In my silent retreat I can lose all my cares" as swimming to me keeps me centered and puts life in perspective (i.e., enjoy life and don't get stressed out on all the stupid stuff). Thanks for posting the poem.

I like the dichotomy thing with the two poems....very clever!....When things can't get any worse ...i.e. when the goggles break and you choke on water from a big wave ect....that's when the kid in the play section beans me in the head with the ball....and then internally (maybe even externally?) shouts to himself .....SIX POINTS!! newmastersswimmer
  • I can't believe my first little poem created all this inspiration. Love your stuff Seagurl, Swimforfun, and Newmasterswimmer! Swimmy : )
  • Oh, the salt water taste! Staying inside is just a waste! Sunning, Stroking, Striving, Try it! It's never too late! Oh, the worst is the start, When zillions of swimmers depart. Kicking, Pushing, Hitting, You can do it, if swimming is in your heart! Oh, beware of all sea life you happen to meet. You might be something that they want to EAT! Munching, Slurping, Crunching, But if you survive it, what a feat!

Wow...That was very good Seagurl! It sure didn't take you very long to take that creative leap?? I'm really blown away with everyone's poetry so far! This poetry idea was definitely a great idea.....Unfortunately I wasn't able to come up with anything yet other than "There once was a swimmer from Nantuckett".......Then it just goes down hill from there! I will sleep on it and hope for a creative inspiration during the night?? I promise I will live up to my word (especially now that Seagurl has delivered) and at least give it a try sometime tommorrow newmastersswimmer

As the water flows across me I feel it’s gentle embrace Weightlessly I glide through Thee I am soaring through outer space There are no restraints to hold me down I am as free as a bird in flight A million miles above the ground Oh what a joyous plight My mind is set free of every stress As I cut through Thee like a knife Oh to feel your smooth caress One of the greatest joys in life newmastersswimmer
  • Swimmy has enough material himself for a small book of poetry......newsmasterswimmer Newmasterswimmer- How can it be? That you think I am a "HE" When, in fact, I am a "SHE" Really must stop rhyming now, But I don't know how! Swimmy : )
