(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.)
I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense.
What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

Way to go, Newmastersswimmer! I've lost four pounds in the past six months that I started swimming myself.
It's not just the "feel-good" sensation you get when swimming, it's looking and feeling great.
When life gives you chlorinated water, swim in it! Swim like there's no tomorrow, or when the Aquatic Center's staff pulls you out for closing time! :p

People I work with think I'm nuts to be in the pool at 5:30 am, but I know better. It's a medititive experience for me, I'm following the lane line, not thinking about anything but the feel of the water, the way my hand enters, stretching out to make my body longer and smoother. Later in the day, when I get a sniff of the chlorine smell that clings to my body, my mind goes right back to how that felt. There's WAY more to it than weight loss and exercise.

Swimming used to be what I did between crosscountry & track. I got really sick & had several operation on my colon & digestive system - the details are very gross. I had to have chemo for about 4 yrs. After the first operation, I had an ostomy bag for a few months. I couldn't run. I swam before but found that swimming was all that I could do.
Now everything is fine but I still can't run. It was really intense. If it weren't for swimming, I'm sure I would be totally miserable & a terrible person to be around. Most swimmers are nice people and good to be around. That's not something you can say about a lot of track & field athelets. Oddly, swimming is far more of a team atmosphere than track & field.
Oh, the sweet smell of chlorine
Seeping into my brain,
Soothing, Calming, Invigorating,
Keeping me sane!
Oh, the water clean and cool
Washing away the stresses of the day,
Splashing, Pulling, Kicking,
Heaven must have a pool!
Oh, the rhythmic underwater sound,
Hypnotizing paradise,
Swishing, Humming, Whooshing,
Swimming is my life!

Glad you all liked my creative outburst so much. You should not encourage me...I might have to write a sequel.
Newmasterswimmer, I consider myself creative, but not with poetry. It must have been the chlorine fumes....

That's very beautiful, Swimmy.
It's amazing what a little Chlorinated Water does to someone.

I just wanted to also say (in addition to what Sonic Swimmer and Seagurl has already said), that I really enjoyed your creative poem!.....Do you often get creative inspirations like this?

Swim Rage....A Horror Story
Oh No! There is a crowd!
Don't these people have another place else to go?
Screeching, Yelling, Howling,
Those kids are way too loud!
Oh No! I have to share MY lane!
They better not be slow!
Creeping, Crawling, Fuming,
LET ME PASS AND GET OUT OF MY WAY!
Oh No! Guess what happened now!
My goggle strap just broke!
Snapping, Dropping, Sinking,
I think I am going to have a cow!
Oh No! It couldn't get much worse!
The wall is awfully hard! Ow! Ow! Ow!
Scraping, Scratching, Bruising,
Maybe it's not too late to try another sport!
