(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.)
I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense.
What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?
swimming is my source of
fun, fulfiment, fitness, friends, and frustration
swimming is the only sport i do
my approach to swimming helps me in other aspects of my life if I choose to apply myself in the same way.
One of my other passions is
Songwriting.
I started in 1998
Working on it a lot each day, for weeks, months, and years like we do in swimming.
I set hard goals and high standards.
I kept after it, bouncing back from set backs.
in 2004 I became a Voting member of the Grammy organization and got to vote in this years Grammy selection process.
Today many artists perform and record my songs.
In this journey I found out that the music industry is difficult and very competitive.
you can hear some of my songs at:

for a while I felt like I'd done all I could do in swimming then I started getting fat. I took a break from competition from
1999 - 2003, but I decided to start training harder again.
Swimming taught me, if there's something I want to accomplish
If I set a goal, then figure out what I need to do, then take action every day, just like we do in swimming training.
I'll start improving and making progress in that direction.
