The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

There are a handful of things that swimming has given to me in the past. First of all, it was a great way to get into shape (I was quite the butterball when I was a kid). Secondly, it taught me time management... swimming takes a lot of your time if you are serious; juggling practices, meets, homework and friends taught me how to be very organized with my time. Third, it gave me self confidence. I felt so much better when I won my heat, race.. or when I had a best time. Plus, it was nice to look good in a swimsuit. And finally... I had fun. You make friends and get to be silly and serious at the same time. I acually moved on to being a coach (just summer teams)... and it brought different sides of swimming out... working with the parents, seeing your swimmers do well... it has been great. Thank you.:p
