(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.)
I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense.
What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

Dear fellow poets - I an so enjoying your awesome lyrical stylings....
Here's one I can't get outa my head - to be sung to the tune of The Beverly Hillbillies:
Let me tell ya a little story 'bout a girl named Nat
She comes from Caly-fornia and ya'll know where that's at
When she was a baby her parents threw her in the pool
And now that she's a grown-up she's a medal wearin' fool
Olympic gold, that is....18 carat....'round her neck....
Well the next thing ya know 'ole Nat's gone to Greece
She was cleanin' up in relays; bringin' swimmers to their knees
Even though she's a sweetheart she won't cut ya any slack
'Cause she's a truly awesome swimmer and she rules the 100 back!
Aaahhhh....it's almost Friday!
