I have two questions about Joining USMS.
1. based on the USMS web site, the nearest "official" masters team to me is in the next county. Since I hope to compete, do I join that team even though I don't know anyone there will probably never meet them?
Or, is it better to go unattached.
2. In an event, like the 100 fly, how many entries are there, average? Is it co-ed. and what are ranges of times that event at a typical local meet. How far do people travel to compete. Do you guys all know each other?
Thats more than two questions.

Swimming unattached is fine, most teams just wont let you be part of relays, and in terms of amount of participants per event, most meets are run just by events and ALL the swimmers compete based on times, sometimes they combine men and women. It's not until the BIG meets that things are broken up by age and sex. By the way even though you are competing with different age groups, you will be ranked in you own age group and will place 1st-2ed-3rd by the swimmers that are within that age bracket.
