Was thinking about doing a triathlon next year since my running and cycling are a bit above par but found out recently that I can't swim more than 25m without completely floundering and gasping for air. Seems I have absolutely no idea of how to swim properly, now have serious doubts about a tri, and think I should find a coach. Question is, should I join USMS in the hope of getting linked up with an understanding/supportive group who will help/coach me or should I find an independent coach first? As a follow up, if I should find a independent coach, anyone know of one in the Saint Clair Shore / Grosse Pointe area of Michigan? I searched everywhere online and come up empty. Many thanks.

There is a masters swim team that practices at Oakland University-- just up I-75 from Grosse Pointe -- where there are some tri-athletes practicing. Practice times are Tuesday & Thursday - 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, and Sunday 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.
They don't have a coach yet, but I know that they are looking and have come across some good candidates.
