Was thinking about doing a triathlon next year since my running and cycling are a bit above par but found out recently that I can't swim more than 25m without completely floundering and gasping for air. Seems I have absolutely no idea of how to swim properly, now have serious doubts about a tri, and think I should find a coach. Question is, should I join USMS in the hope of getting linked up with an understanding/supportive group who will help/coach me or should I find an independent coach first? As a follow up, if I should find a independent coach, anyone know of one in the Saint Clair Shore / Grosse Pointe area of Michigan? I searched everywhere online and come up empty. Many thanks.

Find a coach first. USMS resources that might assist you in finding a coach are available regardless of whether you are registered. If you find a coach you like, you may need to affiliate with his/her USMS program (which will affect how you register). And USMS registration may or may not be required, depending on the group.
Also consider taking private lessons at first - preferrably with the coach of the group you plan to train with.
If, after all, you are unable to find a convenient coach, the USMS Video Library has most of the Total Immersion offerings. Many people have learned to swim from roughly your level by using their videos. But you will need to be USMS registered to use the Video Library.
Checking the USMS Places to Swim section of this site reveals:
