I'll be in Washington later this month and will be staying near the convention center. Does anyone have experience with the YMCA--pool conditions, best time to work out, etc? Thanks.
It's a decent pool. There is a master's workout Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights from 7-8 pm. Good times to go for a swim on your own include right before closing (9:30-10:30 pm) or early afternoon.
However, I think they charge $8/visit for YMCA away members. That's the one drawback I can think of. I still go there when I go back to DC now and then.
I use to live in DC when the corporate Y first opened. It has always seemed very expensive to me. there are such better places toswim that are cheaped - even free. Wilson High School. the pool is nice & the other swimmers are nice it is on a major subway line & very easy to get to. I had many good experiences there.
Marie Reed. It is on 18th street in Adams Morgan. A very diverse neighborhood & proably close to where you are staying. An easy taxi ride. Marie Red is a community center & preschool. Lots of community action takes place there. I lived down the street on T & worked in Adams Morgan. Great night life. the crime is highly over rated.
I don't know the times anymore. If you want to see the city & swim, both pools are great. My favorite DC pool is on Rock Creek at Francis Scott Key Jr. High. It is outdoors so it is closed now. It was great to run from my house thhrough Rock Creek & then swim.
Dc has sevedral masters team. there is Also DCAC which is mostly Gay.
