MY hip hurts!

I just started swimming about a month and a half ago and everything was ok until about a week ago my hip started hurting so bad that the paid echoes almost all the way through my left leg.The pain is basically right in my left buttock, on the side(not where you sit down).I find it kinda weird, I have no idea what caused it.Another funny thing is that while I am swimming I don't really feel it, but as I stop to rest standing I can hardly do it because of the pain. Also, I get that about 20 min. through my work-out.I strech before every time I swim and especially since my hip started hurting like that.Still does not help! I thought maybe I pinched a nerve or something, because the area is not swollen, but the pain is there. ANY SUGGESTIONS?PLEASE, HELP! THANKS.
  • You could have injured yourself from stretching improperly.
  • IT could also have something to do with your stroke mechanics. Have your coach look at your kick to see of there is anything unusual.

My twice pregnant wife cried out, "it's a sciatic nerve!" Why it is happening is another issue. You'll probably have to lay off swimming a while to let the swelling or whatever causes the pain to diminish. Just floating around and relieving the pressure is probably a good start. I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night. Good luck.

Piriformis pain feels almost like sciatic pain (the piriformis runs near or around the sciatic nerve). Causes some of the pain down the leg PUT the pain is more towards the hip side instead of the "crack" of the butt. The piriformis pain can be caused by the SI joint moving (or going out--and not for dinner!). I've also developed it by sitting for prolonged periods of time with one leg crossed and the ankle resting on the knee of the other leg. Something about abduction--which could lead you right back to kicking mechanics. Resting and learning the right stretches can help.

thanks, guys!I made a little research on the internet, and you turned out to be right: it is called sciatica, whether it is sciatic nerve or piriformis(if I understood it right).Anyways, all the sites I visited suggested chiropractor's help, which I do not know if I can afford right now.But at the same time I do not want this to get worse and I definitely want to still enjoy my swimming which is pretty annoying right now.Dunno if I should swim at all. Do you know how I can get rid of that all by myself without doctor's help? How should I strech if that's the way out? Thanks again. P.S.How long can it possibly take?

on delphigroups.com (free register--used to be part of about.com) there is a forum for SI joints. One of the posters on there is a Chiropractor with a site. He posts frequently and has exercises on there to correct the SI joint problem which MAY be what is kicking your sciatica and piriformis. They can be printed out and done at home. It sometimes helps if you have someone to assist with the exercises (:D ). I had the sciatica---tried the heavy duty advil routine, heat and ice routine, the rest routine. Finally had to resort to some PT and finally injections. Was found to be caused, at that time, by a herniated disk (surgery fixed that). When it happens now--or starts to--I start some Bextra (rx only), stretching of the piriformis and hamstrings and can sometimes knock it out. I'll try to get exact name of delphi group forum you want. sacroiliac resources www.kalindra.com/rounds.pdf (for exercises for the SI joint which may be why the sciatic is being "kicked")

2-2-2 posts in one! Yes--surgery was done by an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines (that's all he does along with necks). Saw a neurosurgeon who completely turned me off with his personality. I saw 2 orthopods (one wasn't on insurance or I would have gone with him) and the 1 neuro. In my city--one of the leading spine docs is an orthopod and that's all he does (again--along with necks). As to swimming with the hip problem--might be wise to see a doc about it. I was able to do some freestyle kicking but breaststroke was impossible. I spent alot of time swimming (when I could due to pain) with a pull buoy so I didn't have to use my legs. The bigger problem was that I couldn't stretch out straight enough to use the pull buoy and when the pain really kicked in---I just gave up and spent time on the couch! With the most recent piriformis syndrome--breaststroke (for some reason) was easier than freestyle. I did do alot of pull buoy work as it was a bit painful to kick. I did do some kicking as the "butt work" was good for some movement.

The strange thing is that while swimming I do not really even feel any pain but once i stop and just stand on my feet it kicks in - I am very confused there ...

MSGRUPP!I know I probably should give my hip some rest and not swim, but I am too eager to go to the pool.Do you think I would worsen the situation by that or maybe some gentle swimming could even help?
