Just in from WBAL-AM here in Baltimore. American Michael Phelps won the gold medal Friday in the 100-meter butterfly with an Olympic-record time of 51.25 seconds. American Ian Crocker took the silver in a time of 51.29. Andriy Serdinov of Ukraine won the bronze in 51.36. It's Phelp's fifth gold medal of the games. He has also earned two bronze medals. Phelps tomorrow has a chance to swim in a relay and go for a record-tying eighth medal. Soviet gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin is the only person ever to win eight medals at a Summer Olympics. He did it in Moscow in 1980.
  • I looked like a genius in my office when I said "There's no way Thorpe will let Phelps beat him in the 200 free." Now I look like an idiot because I said the same thing about Crocker and Phelps in the 100 fly! Can't wait to see the race tonight!

I have seen the race and it was a corker ! Crocker had a great start was well ahead at the 50m, under world record time. Phelps was 2 metres down at the 50m and still 1 metre behind with 3m to go. It all came down to the finish, Crockers arms seemed to take an age to exit the water and go forward to the wall, he looked very tired, while Phelps arms whipped in to touch just inches ahead of Crocker. Great race and finish is one to look at in slow-mo ! Just saw mens 50m free, amazing but i won't give it away !

The commentator on the CBC said he had heard that Phelps, who already swam in the medley relay preliminaries will let Crocker swim in the final so that Crocker can get a gold too.
