Hello forum.
Last monday, a friend of mine, a swimmer who writes on the italian forum, has been squalified for 6 month after a doping control.
Does there in USA exist doping control on master atlethe?
He didn't use epo, he just have a joint after dinner.
What do you think about that?
The post about this topic has been censured in Itlay.
Thank you.
Emmett, you could be and frequently am RIGHT. A couple of years back I was a member of the Planning Commitee of USMS and one of our members wanted to bring attention to the use of drug testing for USMS National Meets. No names or people were mentioned but it was discussed also in the Sports Medicine Committee meeting where Jim Miller MD was Chair of the committee, actually more than a couple of years ago. I remember a report in the House of Delegates saying at this time USMS does not forsee any drug testing with any swimmers at any USMS sanctioned events. Since then it has not come up on any agenda at the USAS convention.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is epo? When you talk of a "joint" after dinner, where I come from that means he was smoking "weed", “hooch”, “grass”, “Mary Jane”, or just plain old marijuana…. is that what you meant by “joint”?

Is that bad?
According to a tv program that was on tonight use of caffeine is no longer restricted. They didn't say so on the show but I think I recently read that small amounts of caffeine are performance enhancing but that larger amounts are performance degrading. I don't remember where the turning point was but it was below the level that was legal under the old rules, which is no doubt why they removed the rule.
The show was interesting, sort of a scientific study meets reality tv concept: they took a couple dozen volunteers and split them in three groups, people who were injected with steroids, people who were injected with a placebo, and people who were given various legal supplements. They then trained them for six weeks and measured performance and improvement in some olympic sports (5k run, 100m run, shot put). It seemed like the 100m sprint was where steroids had the strongest effect, they didn't help with the 5k at all, shot put was hard to say because of the technical aspects dominated the training effects. They also did a bunch of more controlled testing.

EPO = erithropoetin (sp?). It is used to help produce red blood cells in, e.g., cancer patients. For athletes, more red blood cells = more oxygen carrying capacity = faster times in endurance events.

I am a doper, I freely admit to abusing coffee, especially before a swim meet. For those with asthma it helps! But it is also bad for people with GERD (heartburn)
I also admit to abusing Reeses peanut butter cups and Pespi cola.
Many swimmers abuse Red Vines.:D
There is no doubt there have been doping in USA masters swimmers ( my opinion) but there are no sanctions. I have seen men gain 20 pounds of muscle in one year, impossible without steroids. A forty year old man with pimples on their back and 4 inch thick chest muscles is a dead give a way.
I only have second hand information on the doping amoung masters at the world championships in Italy. I heard many drugs are available " on the street corner" including HGH, EPO and dozens of steroids oral and injectable.

Actually, we are not bound to comply with FINA. We choose to comply with FINA in most regards, but we are bound only to comply with our own rulebook. Hence we can contest meets in yards, have different age-as-of dates, piddle about with various backstroke start toe placements etc. If FINA makes a rule or rule change, USMS can (and occasionally does) choose to ignor part or all of it - see part 6 of the rule book.
USMS has no drug testing - and even if we were aware of a person's drug use, there is no provision for consequences in our rulebook.
I do not beleive that, with regard to Masters, FINA has any drug restriction or testing.
I could be, and frequently am, wrong (if I am, please quote chapter and verse that indicates so).

I am currently addicted to Mountian Dew and VO2Max shampoo.
I think it is sad if someone feels they have to cheat using drugs. At least I can be proud that when I get out of the pool my accomplishments are from my own hard work. If the person next to me is using drugs to beat me well I can't see them holding their heads up with pride that they accomplished something on their own.
Oh wait, I forgot, I am using Mountian Dew.

An online site is taking wagers as to which country will be the first to have an athlete fail a drug test at the Olympics. China is first at 5-1, U.S. is at 15-1. Top sports are swimming, track & weightlifting.
