does anyone have any ideas for a home made CHEAP pace clock?

Yes, I make the 6" X 6" Pacer clock that you may see on the Kastaway Swim Wear website. The cost through me is $25.00. Let me know if interested.

Go to Wal-Mar, Target, etc and buy a $9.99 digital watch with an oversized face. Put it at the end of the land with one strap under a kickboard - instant pace clock for cheap.
Buy a clock movement with a continuous sweep second feature, a hand, a piece of plywood and paint for the face and off you go! It seems like the only tough part would be finding a movement that would support such a big second hand.
I bought a 10 inch diameter wall clock out of a catalog (for less then 10 bucks), had a friend (machinist) hollow out a slot (not too deep) in a small block of PVC so the clock fit in the slot snugly and wouldn't fall over, took off the hour hand and placed it at the end of my lane in a community pool. You may need a little silicone caulking if you find it getting too wet.
It worked great until I decided I couldn't swim alone and had to find a program.

I did something similar to Jim, except I put the clock in a Rubbermaid salad bowl (secured with silicone to the bottom) with a lid. It stays dry, even in the rain. Works great!
