I have not swum long course in many years and realizing it is different for everyone but what some of the people out there use as a "personal conversion factor" between short course yards and long course meters.

I feel your pain with outdoor backstroke. It is a tough adjustment. Do you have lanelines? That will allow you to hug the laneline to hold your line.
I did better than that at my first outdoor meer: I bumped the lane line. Over and over and over again. It totally killed my times!
