butterfly for older swimmers

Why is it that often older people do a version of butterfly that looks very beautiful but leisurely, like water ballet as my coach says? What is it that we lack that prevents us from doing an energetic, aerobic looking butterfly. My coach says the snap of the legs will do it and I am working on that. Anything else? Thanks

You know, suddenly I can't even do one stroke of butterfly. ;) Scansy, you'll be pleased to know, besides the pictures and audio clips from Nationals, there is a mpeg file of your butterfly on the net. Enjoy. (I think my fly looks very similar.) :D

Hmmmm.... I'm a relatively young guy (34) and my fly looks like a speedboat crash. You know the ones - after the boat lifts off of the water and tumbles with water and parts flying everywhere. Lot's of splashing, little progress and I need to stop soon! Of course, I am not moving that fast.

I agree that fly is harder as adult. I swim the 50 yard about 8 to 9 seconds slower than I did during most of my teen years. I did a workout which covered 700 yards of fly but I also did about 700 yards of *** and only 460 yards of free and 120 yards of back. I was in a short distance pool. I think doing a lot of *** with fly was easier on my shoulders. I'm also a breaststroker,so doing less free for that workout was not a concern for me. And the fly/*** is fun, I swam it once in a workout. As for doing 10(200's), I didn't do that much but I remember doing both fly and *** 200 meter swims on one team, I think I could do in workouts fly a little over 3:00 at 17 years old. That year I swam a 2:47.4, now I would be lucky to do under 4:00 in a 200 meter fly. In masters a 2:47.4 would have put you in 2nd in the US in the women's age groups 45-49 and 50-55.

I can't do fly well to save my life. After 11 yrs. of trying my club coach gave up. Went home from college one year & practiced with my club team to keep in shape. We were starting a set of 10x200s fly. My coach says to me "You can do IM if you want." He finally gave in and realized that no matter how hard I tried, I was never going to be a flyer. I just don't get it. I have fr. down to a science, but fly is apparently beyond my comprehension.

Now that I made that post it decided to work on my computer. Happens all the time. Nice fly. You will have to work a little on less splash on your arm entry:D

Still won't work for me. Oh well, I don't need to see a video of my fly - I live it!:)
