Why is it that often older people do a version of butterfly that looks very beautiful but leisurely, like water ballet as my coach says? What is it that we lack that prevents us from doing an energetic, aerobic looking butterfly. My coach says the snap of the legs will do it and I am working on that. Anything else? Thanks

I agree that fly is harder as adult. I swim the 50 yard about 8 to 9 seconds slower than I did during most of my teen years. I did a workout which covered 700 yards of fly but I also did about 700 yards of *** and only 460 yards of free and 120 yards of back. I was in a short distance pool. I think doing a lot of *** with fly was easier on my shoulders. I'm also a breaststroker,so doing less free for that workout was not a concern for me. And the fly/*** is fun, I swam it once in a workout. As for doing 10(200's), I didn't do that much but I remember doing both fly and *** 200 meter swims on one team, I think I could do in workouts fly a little over 3:00 at 17 years old. That year I swam a 2:47.4, now I would be lucky to do under 4:00 in a 200 meter fly. In masters a 2:47.4 would have put you in 2nd in the US in the women's age groups 45-49 and 50-55.
