Backman ends his posts with "On the next top". The other day someone said that at practice and I hadn't heard it since I was about 12. We use digital clocks now!
I'd love to hear words/sayings used in workout or at meets. Here are some used around our pool:
yak or honk, aka to throw up
the hood's open and the tires are coming off- aka exceedingly tired
switching to guns- aka nothing else is working
"Nightmare on Creek Street" aka a workout to avoid
Irish Mile- aka Kerry's mile (11 laps, 10, 9, 8 etc)
toy box- aka a swimmer who not only has, but uses, every piece of swimming equipment known to man!
garbage can lids- aka TYR swim paddles (sizes 3 and up!)
ugly- aka a very hard set
resource lane- aka the lane we all occasionally end up in where nobody does the set right! nor understands it no matter how many times it is explained!!! (special education reference)
That's all for now... please add on :)
How about the ever popular "outside smoke."
Since I'm seeded in a disproportionate number of outside lanes in Indy I'm hoping this term is used in reference to me!
"Club Med" Those who insist on swimming the workout with fins, and if not with fins with a pull buoy.
"dead logs" those speed challenged length swimmers who hug the black line in the fast lane.
'driftwood' those who draft and drift in the current.
'water beetles' those who go through the motions of breastroke, but don't make much progress.
'lane clearers' Those big hulking swimmers who don the largest paddles and swim aggressively.
'Weapons of mass destruction' Fly swimmers with arm spans bigger than albatroses.
"Red Card" Those swimmers who do suicide turns back into the oncoming swimmer.
'beaver turns'. The swimmers who don't actually touch the wall, rather turn in an oval around the black line.
'touch downs' jumping across the lane to pass a swimmer who is turning on the wall.
'Wendy kick' Named after a team mate. AKA 'social kick' Wendy likes to chat when kicking to other lane mates, so a 50 'wendy kick' is a form of active rest after a hard set. This time chatting is 'legal'
'dq' all those dq'd at a meet have to pool tegether and bring a DQ ice cream cake to the next practise for us after workout

I call paddles and pull buoy "the tools of ignorance" (this is borrowed from baseball--that's what they call catchers' equipment). I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who calls them this. I should mention that I love pull sets :)
Oh where are Shakey and Tom? I bet they have some good ones.
Floaters--someone who is 'warming down' from water aerobics by doing the elementary backstroke in the lap lanes.
