Mountain View coach killed by drunken driver

Popular Mountain View Masters Coach Alan Liu, 31, was killed by a drunken driver as the coach was riding his bicycle on Highway 12 near Santa Rosa, California (about 60 miles north of San Francisco). Alan and his girl friend, Jill Mason, were cycling along Highway 12 when they were hit from behind by a drunk driver. Alan was pronounced dead at the scene, and Jill suffered major head and spinal trauma. She has not regained consciousness and is in intensive care at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Alan had been coaching at Mountain View since 1997 Liu fellow swimmers described him as an enthusiastic and motivated swimmer and coach who work for the team went well beyond the call of duty. "He was the heart and soul of Mountain View Masters," said Laura Schuster, president of the club's board. "He was so dedicated." "Speaking for myself, I would have swam to hell and back for the guy" said Chris Campbell, a fellow coach who added "all the girls were crazy for him." I am very sad to hear this. I didn't know Alan but I would see him at meets; in fact, I saw the team at the most recent Santa Cruz meet. This is sad and shocking news. My thoughts and prayers to the team and the friends and family of Alan and Jill. Kari
