Barracuda Goggles

I have read how several members on this board swear by the Barracuda goggles, and would like to know which model you use for which type of swimming. I want a pair that, ideally, I could use for both my hour and a half swim sessions, as well as for racing. However, if one style is better for the one activity over the other, please tell me which you use. Thanks.

Nope--they are always rinsed and hung up to dry within about 2 hours of swimming. I have fewer problems with the summer goggles than the winter (tinted vs clear)--ortherwise both are identical. I do hang them on the towel bar in the very back of the shower (water doesn't hit there) so maybe it's the moisture in the room. More recently I've been hanging them on the towel bar outside the shower and will see if that helps. Did use some Soft Scrub with bleach on the pads last night (very wet and just used my finger for application). I don't wear eye makeup (and wash it off if I do) before swimming to the contamination isn't coming from makeup.

If your head is the same size as the packaging, lucky you; but my head is too big for that little insert. Now I just carry them loose, out of my bag. I have to be careful not to toss anything on top of them or lay them down on the foam, but they keep their shape better now than they did when I tried to follow the instructions about keeping the insert in them.

I like the original The Standard. For long swims they dont damage tissue around the eyes. Lots of people cant get them to work. They have to be a bit tight at first then they form to your face. See some of the other posts about them for details.

You might find you need 2 different pairs. I use the B300 for most (if not all) of my swimming. I have 2 pairs both are B300 but one has a flat profile and the other a more raised profile. One is fog-resistant and I'm not sure what the other one is but I think UV protection. Both seem to be relatively fog-free. I did get the tinted lens to wear during the summer while swimming days outdoors. I have the clear for indoor swimming. The mission is to find a pair that feels good, fits well and just stick with that one. Alot depends on the shape of your eye socket and the profile of your eyes. Check out the site for barracudas (try the company site--just do a search for barracudas). They have better pix on that site and may be better able to guide you at customer service. There is some care that is involved with these goggles. You don't just throw them in your swim bag and forget about them. They really do need to be washed in cool water after using and line dried before placing back in the provided packaging. I sometimes wash mine with phisoderm to get off the body oil and to try and keep the foam clean. I've even taken a light bleach solution to the foam to get down the mold that can develop in the foam. I haven't had any allergic reaction to the foam even with the slight mold problem.

I have been using the Standard for about three months now and love them. My goggles don't leak anymore - never - not at all - not even a little bit. I think I was a bit lucky because they were that way from day one. I adjusted them to feel comfortable and they never leaked. I did have them tighter at first, but never as tight as other goggles I have used. And lately, I have been able to loosen them even more. I barely get any rings at all. I have to look in a mirror hard to see the rings. Msgrupp, I have not done anything to mine in the three months so far, other than throwing them in the case I got with them. I haven't had any problems. Have you cleaned yours from the start? Or did you wait until you started to have problems?

Oh, not much. It's just that the C in YMCA stands for "Cheats." I reported a while back that I found a new pool, another YMCA. What I didn't realize was that the normal temperature for the pool is 86-88 degrees. I asked about changing it and was not surprised to have them tell me that they can't change the temperature for one person, and that everyone else likes it that hot. Okay, I expected that, so I tried to change my workout to accommodate the temperature. I finally decided it was crazy, found ANOTHER pool, and quit my YMCA membership last week. But when I quit, I had already paid through March 15, but they told me they didn't have enough time to get my credit card information out of their system before charging me for an additional month. So my membership would run through April 15. I told them I didn't WANT my membership to run through April 15. They basically said that's too bad, they didn't have time to get it out of the system, so they were going to charge me for it whether I use the facility or not. When I suggested that they just credit my account back for the charge like any reasonable business, they said their policy prevents them from giving "refunds" on membership dues. I ended up talking to the woman who runs the place, and she was absolutely no help. She kept saying is "It's our policy." I am soooo sick of idiot bureaucrats in general in this god-forsaken city who hide behind their rules and regulations and think that if they have some policy written down that it is inviolable. I talked to her for over an hour trying to find some way to work it out, and it was like talking to a parrot. At one point she even criticized my morals for wanting "special treatment" from their policy of charging people for memberships they aren't using. I am disputing the charge with my credit card company. I wish there were more that I could do. Punishment is in order. Yet my hands are tied. I know one thing. I will NEVER have a membership at a YMCA again. The organization is run by thieves and liars, the scum of the earth pretending to be operating under Christian values. And if any opportunity ever presents itself to embarrass that organization or harm it in any legal way, you can bet I will do it. I'll probably never have the chance, so they don't care that they have made an enemy. So that is why my signature says...

I don't use the standard inserts that come with the Barracuda packaging. I bought the "crush resistant case" for the goggles - an extra $10. The case is designed prevent crushing the foam and protect the lenses. It also has several holes in it for air circulation. It really seems to help.

That's too bad, Shaky. I am pretty sure what your local Y is doing is illegal. Definitely take it up with your credit card company, especially since it's not even March 15 yet. Charging ahead of time for services not received can be done with things like cable TV and such, but they DO credit you back if you cancel or move. Your YMCA is not on good ground here. I don't think you can legally charge someone for services they don't want and don't even receive. I do have to say that it's probably the local folks who are screwing it up for everyone else, as my local YMCA is much nicer. They keep the pool at 80-84, which is kinda warm but doable. Also, they are pretty personable, and I haven't had any billing issues. I am interested to find out what happens.
