Spt, I am a bit curiousity about the current state of college athletics. (Well, actually, I'm concerned.) Could you explain a bit more about your team cutting swimmers? Division I, II or III? I'm assuming that a scholarship is not the issue, correct? Your men's team actually has so many people "walking on" that they can afford to take only the swimmers they want? Has the coach explained why the size of the team is limited? (pool space, coaching time, Title IX, can only afford to have so many swimmers on the traveling squad?) As far as a "slower" swimmer on the squad, I could see that under the right circumstances. If the individual is a senior and has contributed in the past, he may be kept on in recognition of that, and the fact that the freshmen have three more chances. He could be on the team for a different event. Plenty of explanations, as well as the possibility of nepotism. But, I think you are on the right track trying to stay positive, and pursuing your chances for next year. Have you checked the places to swim section of this web site? Also, if you're at a mid to large university, the chances are good that there is a student run "masters team" or workout group, esp. if the varsity are cutting people who want to swim. Good luck. Please feel free to join the discussion threads, or contact us off-line, if you have any questions, or are looking for advice. Good Luck, Matt
