What I was told (also in high school) was that the lactate in milk would have a similar effect as lactic acid (buildup in the muscles during exercise). So milk is good when you are conditioning, but not so good close to competition. (That was the theory...)
Dunno... the buffers in milk help soothe my stomach. Especially after a meet when I have swallowed lots of air (and not much food).
